Yikes! All this time has passed…
…and I don’t even have any new pics to post. I guess Lily’s just not as cute as she used to be, so I’m not as inspired to grab the camera. Ha! Bill and I just stand around admiring our beautiful girl all the time. Hopefully I can snap some new pics soon.
Although I haven’t posted in a while, there’s not much new to report. Just the day to day stuff. Here’s a rundown (in convenient bullet-point format):
- I started working one day a week, which is the perfect amount right now.
- Lily started Parents’ Day Out that one day a week, and has so far demonstrated her giftedness for fingerpainting, sticker application to construction paper, and the ability to put away her own toys upon request. She does great in this new setting — whimpers briefly at drop-off, but at pick-up time she is so involved in play that she is reluctant to leave.
- Fall arrived overnight the day after Labor Day. Seriously, we went to the pool on Labor Day, basked in the 90 degree heat, and two days later dragged out the sweatshirts and jackets, along with the umbrella, as it rained for nearly a week straight. But now it is autumn perfection out there. Crisp mornings warming to sunny afternoons.
- As much as we have wanted to get OUT in this weather, some things seem to want to get IN our house, namely 1.4 billion ants and one VERY speedy mouse. I wish I could have video-taped Bill’s elaborate plan last night to trap said mouse. I came down the stairs, and he was poking around in a corner, and then he sort of jumped back, and this dark flash streaked across the living room floor, at which time I transformed into a 1950’s sit-com housewife, screaming and leaping onto a nearby chair. We are unfortunately somewhat experienced in mouse-catching around here — it seems the cooler weather drives them in through the cracks and gaps inevitable in a 75-year-old house. Typically we put out the no-kill traps for a few days and, if they don’t take us up on that offer, the snap traps come out. And when I say “we” I mean that my participation is limited to a supervisory level only.
- I made my first pie from scratch all on my own. It was French apple, and it was such a rousing success that it was quickly followed by a second. Bill and I then reluctantly agreed pies would need to be a “sometimes food” (as Cookie Monster would say). I followed my mother’s advice that you shouldn’t skimp on a store-bought crust; people underestimate the importance of the crust in a good pie, she sagely affirms. As I stood at the kitchen counter, employing my rolling pin for the first time since optimistically putting it on our wedding registry five years ago, I declared proudly, “This is the most domestic thing I’ve ever done!”

- Lily has been sick — double ear infections — and she’s been cutting eight teeth for about a month now. It has all come to a hilt the last couple of nights, resulting in sleepless nights for Mommy. Bill is also sick, so I’ve been taking the night shift. Both nights she has eventually ended up in our bed, which is better than continuing to rock her in the glider in only one respect — that I get to recline. Sleep does not follow, as I can’t imagine a more active baby in her sleep. She is no less active while asleep than awake. Turning, rotating (feet in my face), whimpering, sitting up, flopping down — I find myself staring at the clock, willing it to move ahead to morning, only to feel defeated and frustrated when morning does arrive. Today Bill took her for a bit once she woke up so that I could go back to sleep for a bit, and when I got up, the most amazing thing had happened. She was gone. Bill had called my parents and explained our desperation, so my dad had picked her up and taken her to their house! It’s a glorious morning to get to sit and have a cup of coffee in peace. Still, we have things to do this beautiful day — I’m hoping to hit the zoo with friends — so I need to resume my identity and retrieve my daughter.
Happy Thursday! Happy fall!
